[Article] Jung Eun Ji and Kim Hyun Joong spark controversy with their ignorance

A PINK’s Jung Eun Ji and Kim Hyun Joong recently sparked controversy, following the broadcast of the latest episode of SBS TV variety ‘Barefooted Friends’ on September 8th.
When asked about the capital of India during a quiz, Eun Ji was the first to answer as she said, “Taj Mahal!” Kim Hyun Joong then added, “Isn’t Taj Mahal a religion?”
Their ignorance was laid bare for all viewers to see, but what got viewers riled up even further were seeing that Eun Ji and Hyun Joong had a nonchalant reaction towards getting the answer hopelessly wrong and not feeling embarrassed in one bit.
For the record, the capital of India is New Delhi. The Taj Mahal is a white marble mausoleum located in Agra along the banks of the Yamuna River. It was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal, and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
After the broadcast, ‘India’s capital’ and ‘Taj Mahal’ immediately became hotly searched terms on major search portals in Korea. If it was a conversation between friends, one could just laugh and let it go. But idol stars are looked upon as role models, especially among the younger generation because of their popularity.
The era where singers and idols would just sing and dance on stage are over. Idol stars nowadays have to do much more, to meet the expectations of the younger generation.
As their ignorance was laid bare on broadcast, the idol stars should at least feel embarrassed. But Eun Ji and Hyun Joong had a nonchalant reaction to it, and that riled viewers up greatly.
Many netizens even commented that such idols should just leave the show. “As a role model for young people, how could Jung Eun Ji not even have the basic knowledge of such things? I hope she isn’t on the next episode,” “Is this something that can be let go with just a smile?” “There are some things where you cannot just draw a line across. They actually just brushed it off with a nonchalant attitude and it is heart-breaking to see that they ignored it totally. I really hope they won’t be on the show anymore.”
‘Knowledge’ is gradually being used as a gag these days on variety shows, and viewers tend to just laugh it off. But there has to be a line drawn somewhere, otherwise this will just keep happening. Through the broadcast, idol stars really do have to reflect on their grasp of basic knowledge.
