How do you know when a kdrama has you hooked? There's a theory about that. It happens when you start humming any of the songs in the OST. And there are some really excellent soundtracks out there. Quite a few drama OSTs have more than one song worth buying and listening to and not just because they remind you of the drama.
Here are just a few kdrama OSTs to check out.
City Hunter: This drama about a young man raised to revenge his father has a nice mix of upbeat and soulful sounds. It includes the plaintive "Lonely Day" by J-Symphony, the super-catchy "Cupid" by Girls Day, the romantic songs "Sarang" by Yim Jae Beum and "Suddenly" by Kim Bo Kyung, as well as the memorable "Goodbye" by Jonghyun.
Dream High: As this is a drama about teens at a performing arts school, it's only natural that it will have some great music. The title song "Dream High" is performed by the series stars: 2PM's Taecyeon and Wooyoung, miss A's Suzy and Kim Soo Hyun. The OST includes the sweet song "Someday" by Eugene and Woo Young, "Can't I Love You," by 2 AM's Chang Min and Jin Woon, and the dreamy "Winter Child" sung by Suzy.
Boys Over Flowers: Having singers in the cast helped round out this OST. As well as two songs by star Kim Hyung Joong's band SS501, "Because I'm Stupid" and "Someday Do You Know," there's "My Everything," a romantic ballad by Lee Min Ho. Another sweet song is "A Little" by Seo Jin Young.
"You're Beautiful" is a drama about a band and features real-life musicians FT Island's Lee Hong Ki and CNBlue's Jung Jong Hwa, as well as Jang Geun Suk and Park Shin Hye. The drama and its songs were so well liked that the fictional band, Anjell, was asked to perform a concert. The band sings the upbeat "I Will Promise You." JGS contributes the heartfelt "Without A Word" and in the drama does a great duet with Park Shin Hye, "What Should I Do?" which unfortunately did not make it on to the CD. Lee Hong Ki infuses all of Jeremy's playful spirit into the catchy "Still (As Ever)" and Jung Yong Hwa pleads his love with "Because I Miss You."
These are just a few of the many great soundtracks on recent kdramas. For the next Kdrama Musical Notes, we'll explore the best kdrama songs and/or artists. Recommendations?
